Present perfect is used in 2 occasions.                                                                    since and for

1.  In past when time is not important or indicated.                                          Expresses a situation that began in

    We have watched the movie. (Time not important)                                 the past and continues to the present.                                                                                                                               since (desde)  =   continuous time

2. From the past to now.                                                                                     for (por)            =    amount of time

    He has lived in Costa Rica    for         3 years..
